Originally, “Far Far Away” was only going to send out physical books. However, I want to research further into the benefits of e-books and make an informed decision to include them or not.
What are the benefits?
- E-books often involve engaging illustrations, animations and games which can make reading more enjoyable for children.
- There is often audio and music which can help them understand plot developments e.g. happy music when a problem is solved.
- Narration is an optional feature. Hearing words being said out loud can help them learn new words and expand their vocabulary.
- Narration can be helpful for children who are just starting to read independently as they can follow along. This can also be helpful for those with learning difficulties.
- E-books would be quicker to receive than physical books as they don’t have to be sent in the post.
- They are better for the environment as they don’t require the packaging that a physical book would be sent in.
- E-books are cheaper than physical books.
- Travel friendly - all of the e-books can be accessed on a single device rather than having to pack physical books.
- They are more accessible e.g. children with visual impairments can zoom in on the text or make the text bigger.
- It can motivate reluctant readers - some children have a negative outlook on physical books. Whereas, if they can read on a tablet, it may seem like less of a chore. This is a format they are more familiar with.
Potencial drawbacks
- Animations and sound effects can be distracting from the story. Children may find it difficult to concentrate.
- Games within the book can also be distracting. It may cause the child to just want to play the games rather than read the story.
- They are not suitable for bedtime. The bright light from the device may cause sleeping difficulties. Therefore, physical books should be used at this time instead.
