This week, we met up in smaller groups to have a discussion about our 3 main ideas for our major project. The aim was to narrow down these ideas to 1 so we can begin the research process for it.
Rejecting an idea
Going in, I was 80% sure that I wanted to go for the product which assists people in learning how to drive. I am quite passionate about the topic as I had quite a negative experience when learning how to drive. I found it difficult to find an available instructor and the lessons were very expensive. Once I found an instructor, my lessons were quite unorganised and I felt that I wasn’t covering every area I had to to pass my test. Therefore, it felt like I was spending my time and money poorly. The product I was considering would hopefully solve these issues.
However, after discussing it with Daniel and the group, I felt that the problem may not have been as prevalent as I first thought. Although there are definitely issues to be solved in the industry, it is still a good system which teaches people how to drive.
It was pointed out to me that if someone had an incompetent driving instructor, this product would make them interact with an instructor even more. This could make their experience worse rather than improve it. If I still wanted to go for this idea, I may have to adjust it so the student has more independence in their learning.
Choosing another idea
There is one idea that I had been excited about when I first came up with it but later pushed it to the back of my mind. This idea was the book subscription service for children. One of the reasons I thought this may not work is because there is quite a lot of competition when it comes to book subscriptions. However, we discussed how we could make this more unique, for example:
After this discussion, I regained my love for this idea and it reminded me of the reason I wanted to do it in the first place. Therefore, I am going to focus on this idea and see where it takes me.
